John Thurtell, Murderer of M. Weare, Probert's Cottage.
John Thurtell was found guilty of the murder of M. Weare at Radlett in 1823. Thurtell's lively life-style created much interest in the trial. Plays were written, he "appeared" in Madame Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors, his skull is kept at he Royal College of Surgeons.
There is a mug in the Willett Collection with Thurtell's portrait. The pink lustre decorated jug shown here has the same portrait but also shown on the reverse is the murder scene entitled "PROBERT'S COTTAGE".
